Restoration
and repairs to historic buildings
The restoration of
and repairs to historic buildings requires special skills and an in-depth
knowledge of the principles of building construction throughout the centuries.
However, even this is not enough when dealing with such buildings, as there are
often regional variations in the techniques and materials used. Consequently
thorough investigation is needed to assess a structure prior to any restoration
work or repairs being carried out.
Although all work to historic buildings must satisfy structural
principles it is essential that as much of the original construction as
possible is retained. These criteria often conflict and this creates the need
for bespoke solutions to particular problems.
Restorations and
repairs must be sympathetic and modern materials must be used with care to
avoid the effects of differential movement.
Although generally
historic buildings are robust and have reasonably high load-carrying
capabilities difficulties can arise in satisfying the requirements of current
Standards and Codes of Practice where there is a change of use from say
domestic to places of access to the public.
Again bespoke solutions to the problems are necessary and often these
are only found by adopting a pragmatic approach.
